B vitamins, magnesium & co - nutrients against inner restlessness

Your nervous system needs building blocks

Imagine your nervous system as an orchestra. The musicians are your nerve cells—and the instruments? Those are nutrients. If an instrument is missing, the music sounds off-key: restlessness, sleep problems, anxiety, exhaustion.

We often look for the cause in our psyche, in our thoughts, or in our life circumstances. But sometimes the solution is much simpler: your body is missing a building block.

B Vitamins — The Nervous System Team

The B vitamins work as a team. Each has a specific role in your nervous system:

Magnesium — the anti-stress mineral

Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions—including many that affect your nervous system:

Daily requirement: 300–400 mg. Good sources: Nuts (especially cashews), oatmeal, bananas, dark chocolate, legumes, spinach.

Tip: Take magnesium in the evening — it promotes muscle relaxation and improves sleep quality.

Iron and Zinc

Iron

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide—especially among women of childbearing age. Iron transports oxygen to the brain. Deficiency manifests as:

Important: The ferritin level (stored iron) is a more reliable indicator than the hemoglobin level. Optimal: over 50 µg/l.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for neurotransmitter function and the immune system. Deficiency can cause apathy, irritability, and reduced cognitive performance. Good sources: pumpkin seeds, beef, lentils, oatmeal.

Blood test recommended A simple blood test by your GP will show you whether you are lacking any nutrients. B12, ferritin, vitamin D and magnesium in particular should be checked regularly - especially if you are a vegetarian or vegan.

Can a lack of nutrients cause anxiety?

Yes, deficiencies in magnesium, B vitamins, iron and vitamin D can exacerbate or even trigger anxiety symptoms. A blood count can provide clarity here. Correcting the deficiency is no substitute for therapy, but it can significantly alleviate the symptoms.

Should I take dietary supplements?

Only if there is a proven deficiency. Indiscriminate supplementation can be harmful - some nutrients (iron, vitamin A, zinc) are toxic in excessive doses. Get tested first, then supplement selectively.

Which nutrients do I particularly need as a vegetarian?

B12 (mandatory supplementation!), iron, zinc, omega-3 and vitamin D. A vegetarian diet can be very healthy - but requires conscious planning of critical nutrients.

How quickly does magnesium work against restlessness?

Many people report better sleep and less restlessness after just 1-2 weeks of regular intake. However, it takes 4-8 weeks for optimal cell levels. It is best to take it in the evening - magnesium citrate or glycinate are well absorbed.
