The axles
Ascendant, Descendant, MC and IC: The four cornerstones of the horoscope and their significance for your life.
Four specific points in the horoscope form two axes that divide the horoscope into four quadrants. These axes are among the most sensitive points in the natal chart—planets located near them take on special significance.
The Horizon Axis: AC – DC
Ascendant (AC) – The point on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. It determines how you come across to others and how you perceive the world. The Ascendant is the gateway through which you enter life. It is as unique as a signature and changes approximately every two hours, which is why the exact time of birth is so important.
Descendant (DC) – Located opposite the Ascendant, it describes your experience of “you”: what you seek in relationships and what qualities attract you in others. The DC often reveals precisely the qualities that you yourself embody less and therefore seek in others.
The Meridian Axis: MC – IC
Medium Coeli (MC) – The highest point in the horoscope, also known as the Midheaven. It represents your professional calling, the role you play in public, and the goal you are striving toward in life. The sign of the MC provides clues as to the field in which you can find your calling.
Imum Coeli (IC) – The lowest point, opposite the MC. It symbolizes your origins, your spiritual roots, and what is deeply familiar to you. The IC describes the foundation that supports you—your inner home, to which you can always return.
The interaction of the axles The two axes span a field of tension: The horizon axis (AC-DC) connects the ego with the you, the meridian axis (MC-IC) connects the inner roots with the outer purpose. Where you come from (IC), where you are going (MC), who you are (AC) and who you need (DC) - these four points form the basic framework of your life path.
