The four elements

Fire, earth, air and water: the four elements describe basic temperaments and approaches to life.

The four elements

Each zodiac sign belongs to one of the four elements. These elements describe fundamental temperaments and approaches to life. The distribution of the planets across the elements in a natal chart reveals which temperament is particularly pronounced in a person.

The theory of the elements has its origins in ancient philosophy. Empedocles formulated the idea that all existence consists of four basic substances—a concept that was further developed by Aristotle and eventually adopted by astrology.

The Elements in Detail

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) – Enthusiasm, drive, and zest for life. Fire signs act intuitively and are driven by an inner flame. They inspire others with their energy and optimism. Their challenge lies in developing patience and not trying to burn through everything at once.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) – Practicality, stability, and realism. Earth signs need tangible results and create stable foundations. They embody reliability and have a natural sense of what is feasible. Their challenge: not clinging too tightly to security.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) – Intellectual capacity, communication, and objectivity. Air signs live in the world of ideas and value intellectual exchange. They can recognize connections and build bridges between people. Their challenge is not to lose touch with their emotions.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) – Emotional depth, empathy, and intuition. Water signs sense moods and navigate the world of emotions. They possess deep empathy and creative power. Their challenge: not to let themselves be overwhelmed by others’ emotions.

The Balance of the Elements in the Birth Chart

In a birth chart, the planets are distributed across different signs and thus across different elements. A person with many planets in fire signs will approach the world differently than someone whose planets are predominantly in water signs.

It is particularly revealing when an element is missing from the horoscope or is very weakly represented. The missing element can then become a life theme—something one must consciously acquire because it is not naturally available.
