Doshas
The doshas are the three basic life energies in the Ayurvedic system: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each person carries all three, but in an individual composition that determines their constitution, character and health tendencies. Ayurveda considers a balanced ratio of the doshas to be the basis of health and well-being.
What are the doshas?
In Ayurveda, the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—describe the fundamental bioenergetic principles that govern all physical and mental processes. They arise from the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) and shape a person’s individual constitution, known as Prakriti.
An overview of the three doshas
- Vata (Air + Ether): Represents movement, creativity, and communication. Vata-dominant people are often lively, creative, and enthusiastic—but when out of balance, they tend toward anxiety, sleep disturbances, and restlessness.
- Pitta (Fire + Water): Represents transformation, digestion, and intellect. Pitta types are determined, focused, and passionate—but when out of balance, they may tend toward irritability and inflammatory conditions.
- Kapha (Earth + Water): Represents stability, endurance, and nurturing. Kapha-dominant people appear calm and grounded—but when out of balance, they tend toward lethargy and clinging.
Doshas and Nutrition
Ayurvedic nutrition recommends tailoring one’s diet to the dominant dosha type: Vata needs warming, grounding foods; Pitta benefits from cooling, light foods; Kapha is brought into balance by light, stimulating foods. It is interesting to note that these principles share common ground with modern concepts regarding nutrition and inner balance.
Can my dosha type change?
The innate basic constitution (Prakriti) remains stable. However, the current constitution (vikriti) can change due to diet, stress, seasons and lifestyle. Ayurvedic measures aim to bring Vikriti back into line with Prakriti.
Do all people have only one dominant dosha?
No - many people are so-called bi-doshic, i.e. equally characterized by two doshas. Some have all three in almost equal measure (tri-doshic), which is considered rare and balanced.
