The planets

Sun, moon and the eight planets: What each celestial body means in the horoscope and how it shapes your personality.

The planets

In astrology, the planets are considered the central forces in a horoscope. Each planet represents a specific principle, energy, or area of life. In astrological terms, the Sun and the Moon are also counted among the “planets,” even though, from an astronomical perspective, they are, of course, a star and a satellite.

The personal planets

The personal planets move relatively quickly through the zodiac and shape a person’s individual traits.

Sun – The Core Self. The Sun represents your fundamental self, your will, and your life energy. The sign in which the Sun was located at your birth is your “zodiac sign” in common parlance.
Moon – The Inner World. The Moon reflects your feelings, needs, and unconscious reaction patterns. It reveals what you need to feel safe and secure.
Mercury – The Thinker and Mediator. Mercury governs communication, intellectual capacity, and the way you process and convey information.
Venus – Love and Values. Venus describes how you form relationships, what you find beautiful, and what values are important to you.
Mars – Drive and Assertiveness. Mars represents your energy, your ambition, and the way you approach conflicts and pursue your goals.

The Social Planets

Jupiter and Saturn take years to complete a cycle through the zodiac and shape issues that span generations.

Jupiter – Growth and Meaning. Jupiter shows where you seek expansion, where happiness and abundance can enter your life, and how you find meaning.
Saturn – Structure and Responsibility. Saturn demands discipline, teaches through limitations, and provides long-term stability and maturity.

The Transpersonal Planets

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto move so slowly that they shape entire generations. In a personal horoscope, they exert their influence primarily where they form close aspects to personal planets.

Uranus – Liberation and Renewal. Uranus stands for originality, sudden changes, and the urge to break down old structures.
Neptune – Dissolution and transcendence. Neptune connects you with spirituality, intuition, and artistic inspiration, but can also bring confusion and illusion.
Pluto – Transformation and depth. Pluto represents profound processes of change, power, and the ability to emerge stronger after a crisis.
