Human Design: The system that can change your life
What is Human Design? The 5 types, the 9 centers and how to use strategy & authority in everyday life - explained by certified human design analyst Clara Schuster.
When Human Design Turned My Life Upside Down
I was 30 years old, in the midst of a career crisis, when my mentor asked me, “Have you ever looked at your Human Design chart?” I knew almost nothing about the system. But when I saw my chart and read that I’m a Projector—someone who isn’t built for sustained work, but for leadership and guidance, for deep insight rather than constant productivity—it was as if someone had turned on a light.
For years, I had compared myself to Generators—people who have endless energy for work. No wonder I was always exhausted. Human Design gave me permission to be different. That was the beginning of my real journey.
In this article, I’ll explain what Human Design is, how it came about, the five types that exist, and how this system, in combination with astrology and numerology, enables an extraordinarily deep understanding of yourself.
What is Human Design?
Human Design is a synthetic system for self-discovery that was received in 1987 by the Canadian-German mystic Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower) on the island of Ibiza. Ra described how, over the course of eight days, he had an intense mystical experience in which an “inner being” communicated the system’s fundamental principles to him.
Human Design uniquely combines:
- Astrology – date, time, and place of birth form the basis
- I Ching – the Chinese book of oracles with 64 hexagrams
- Kabbalah – the Jewish-mystical Tree of Life
- Hindu chakra system – the 9 energy centers
- Quantum physics – concepts of neutrino streams and information fields
The result is a personalized Bodygraph—a diagram with 9 centers and 64 gates that shows which energies within you are defined (constantly active) and which are open (receptive to others). You can find more information on the official Jovian Archive portal, founded by Ra Uru Hu.

The 5 Human Design Types
At the heart of Human Design are the 5 types. Your type describes your fundamental energy dynamics—how you generate, use, and interact with others.
1. Generator (approx. 37% of the population)
You are the life force of the world. You have a defined sacral center and thus sustainable energy for work that inspires you. Your strategy: Respond. Wait for life to speak to you—and then respond with your physical reaction (yes or no). If you respond incorrectly: frustration.
2. Manifesting Generator (approx. 33% of the population)
You are a multi-passionate person—fast, creative, with your own path. You don’t work linearly; instead, you jump from one thing to another. This isn’t a mistake; it’s your design. Strategy: React, then inform, then act.
3. Projector (approx. 20% of the population)
You are not an energy-driven person—you are a leader and an insight-driven type. You see what others don’t see. You are made for deep understanding, advising, and leading. Strategy: Wait for an invitation. If you impose yourself: bitterness.
4. Manifestor (approx. 9% of the population)
You are here to get things moving—you are the only one who can act independently. You don’t need an invitation and don’t have to react. Strategy: Inform others before you act to avoid resistance.
5. Reflector (approx. 1% of the population)
You have no defined centers—you are a mirror for your environment. Your environment strongly influences you. Strategy: Wait one lunar month (28 days) before making important decisions. You are rare and unique.
Strategy, Authority, and the 9 Centers
In addition to your type, strategy and inner authority are the most important tools in Human Design:
- Strategy – How you interact with life (see above under Types)
- Authority – How you make the right decisions: through the gut (Sacral), the heart, the emotional wave, or intuition
The 9 centers in Human Design are analogous to the chakras, but not identical. A defined center (marked in color on the chart) means: This energy is constantly active within you. An open center (white) means: You absorb energy from others there and amplify it.
The Sacral Center is particularly relevant—it is defined only in Generators and Manifesting Generators. The Solar Plexus Center (Emotions) is defined in about 50% of people and determines whether someone makes decisions via the emotional wave.

Human Design, Astrology, and Numerology: The Triangle of Self-Knowledge
Human Design alone is already profound. But when combined with astrology and numerology, it becomes transformative. Each system sheds light on a different aspect of your nature:
- Human Design reveals your energy system—how you function, how you make decisions
- Astrology reveals the qualities and themes you bring with you into this life
- Numerology reveals the life path and the purpose underlying this incarnation cycle
I’ve seen people truly breathe a sigh of relief when they hold an integrated profile from all three systems in their hands for the first time. It’s not a “Now I know who I am and what I’m supposed to do”—it’s more like: “Ah. So that’s how it all makes sense.”
That is exactly what the HumanStars profile offers: a holistic, integrated analysis of all three systems—in a document you can use every day.
Frequently Asked Questions About Human Design
How do I calculate my Human Design chart?
You’ll need your date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. Free charts are available on Jovian Archive and myBodyGraph.com.
Is Human Design legitimate or esoteric?
Human Design is a spiritual system of self-discovery—it does not claim to be scientifically provable. Many people report profound insights gained through their chart. It is best understood as an invitation to self-reflection, not as dogma.
Can my Human Design type change?
No. Your Bodygraph is calculated based on your time of birth and remains constant throughout your life. What changes is your understanding and integration of your type.
What does a completely open (white) center mean?
An open center means that you do not generate constant energy there, but rather absorb and amplify the energy of other people. This can be enriching (receptivity to others) or conditioning (you adopt the patterns of others). The key lies in awareness of this dynamic.
What type do most people have?
At about 70%, Generators and Manifesting Generators together are the most common types. Projectors make up about 20%, Manifestors about 9%, and Reflectors are very rare at about 1%.
How do I use my Human Design in everyday life?
The first step is to know your strategy and authority and apply them consciously. As a Generator: Learn to trust your gut reaction. As a Projector: Wait for genuine invitations instead of imposing yourself. As a Manifestor: Inform others before you act. Change comes through experimentation, not through belief.
What is the difference between Human Design and MBTI?
The MBTI (Myers-Briggs) is based on self-assessment through questionnaires. Human Design is based on the planetary constellations at the time of birth and 88 days prior—so it is not dependent on self-perception. Many people find Human Design more precise because it reveals what is, not what one thinks one is.
