Opposition
The opposition is an astrological aspect in which two planets are opposite each other - at a distance of around 180 degrees. It is considered one of the main aspects and brings with it tension, polarity and the potential for awareness through confrontation.
What is an opposition?
In an opposition, two planets are exactly opposite each other—they occupy positions 180 degrees apart (orb: approx. 6–8 degrees). In the zodiac, the two planets are always in complementary yet contrasting signs—such as Aries and Libra, or Taurus and Scorpio.
The opposition symbolizes a back-and-forth movement between two poles. Those who have this aspect in their birth chart often experience the feeling of being torn between two needs or areas of life. At the same time, it holds potential: those who integrate both sides, rather than suppressing one, can achieve a high degree of balance.
How does the opposition manifest in everyday life?
- It can manifest in external conflicts—for example, through people who embody the repressed pole.
- It encourages reflection and self-awareness.
- When well-integrated, it fosters diplomacy, a shift in perspective, and balance.
The opposition is not an aspect that needs to be “resolved”—it invites us to deal creatively with opposites. Compared to the square, it creates less friction but is often more clearly felt, as the areas of life involved become clearly visible. You can find more about all aspects in the article on aspects.
Is the opposition always a difficult aspect?
It is considered challenging, but is not a judgment of fate. The tension it creates can serve as a motor for growth - especially if you consciously integrate both planetary energies involved.
What distinguishes the opposition from the square?
Both are considered aspects of tension, but the square (90 degrees) creates an inner friction that often has a more unconscious effect. The opposition (180 degrees) is more often projected outwards - for example in relationship conflicts - and is therefore more tangible.
