The aspects
Conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition: the five main aspects of astrology and what they mean.
Aspects are angular relationships between two planets in a horoscope. They reveal how different aspects of one’s personality interact—whether they work together harmoniously or create tension. Aspects are what truly bring a horoscope to life, as they describe a person’s inner dynamics.
A distinction is made between harmonious aspects (sextile, trine), which allow energy to flow, and challenging aspects (square, opposition), which spur growth. The conjunction holds a special position—it can be either, depending on the planets involved.
The Five Main Aspects
Conjunction (0°) – Two planets are at the same point in the zodiac. Their energies merge and reinforce each other. Depending on the planets involved, this can be a powerful concentration of energy—or a challenge when very different principles clash.
Sextile (60°) – A harmonious aspect that suggests talents and opportunities. Sextiles are supportive and open doors, but they require personal initiative to realize their potential. They are like a friendly invitation waiting to be accepted.
Square (90°) – A tense aspect that can lead to inner conflicts and friction. Squares are challenging, but at the same time they are powerful engines for growth and change. Without squares in a horoscope, the drive to develop further is often missing.
Trine (120°) – The most harmonious aspect. Trines allow energies to flow effortlessly and reveal areas of natural talent and ease. The danger: Because everything comes so easily, trine talents are sometimes not consciously utilized or developed further.
Opposition (180°) – Two planets are opposite each other. Oppositions create tension between opposing poles that calls for integration and balance—like two sides of the same coin. The art lies in living both poles, rather than suppressing one.
