Square
The square is an astrological aspect of tension in which two planets make an angle of 90 degrees. It is considered one of the most challenging aspects in the horoscope and signals inner friction - but also a strong drive for change and development.
What is a square?
A square occurs when two planets form an angle of 90 degrees to each other (orb: approx. 6–8 degrees). In the zodiac, the planets involved are in signs of the same quality principle—that is, both in cardinal, both in fixed, or both in mutable signs. This structural relationship creates friction: the planets pursue similar goals in very different ways.
The square is considered a challenging aspect. Wherever it appears in the horoscope, needs or drives collide that can hinder one another. Those with a strong Mars–Saturn square may recognize the pattern: one wants to charge forward (Mars), but is repeatedly held back by doubts or external limits (Saturn).
Squares as a Driver of Growth
Despite the difficulty—or perhaps precisely because of it—squares are considered powerful driving forces in astrology. They create pressure that motivates action and change. Many people with a horoscope full of squares are exceptionally determined because they have learned to deal productively with inner tensions.
A Grand Square (four planets in mutual square) is a rare, intense configuration with high transformative potential. You can find a complete overview of all aspects in the article on aspects.
Is a square worse than a trine?
Not necessarily. Trines show natural talents, squares show areas for development. If you understand your squares and actively work with them, you can grow enormously - while unused trigon talents can peter out in comfort.
Why are planets in a square in the same quality (cardinal, fixed, mutable)?
Because the three qualities each comprise four characters that are 90 degrees apart. For example: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are all cardinal - and always 90 degrees apart.
