Reminder set (EFT)

The reminder phrase is a short formulation that is repeated at each point during the EFT tapping sequence. It keeps the attention on the emotional issue and prevents the nervous system from blocking out the problem during the process.

What is the reminder phrase in EFT?

After the setup phrase has been spoken and the karate point has been tapped, the actual tapping sequence begins, moving through the individual meridian points. At each of these points, the so-called reminder phrase is repeated—a short, concise phrase that keeps the emotional issue present.

Form and Function

The reminder phrase is typically a shortened version of the problem stated in the setup phrase. For example, if the setup phrase was, “Even though I feel this deep exhaustion, I fully accept myself,” then the reminder phrase might be, “This exhaustion” or “I am so exhausted.”

It is spoken aloud or silently at each tapping point and may change organically over the course of a sequence as new thoughts or feelings arise. This is not only allowed but often a sign that processing is getting underway.

Why is a reminder phrase necessary?

Without the reminder phrase, the nervous system would unconsciously block out the distressing issue during tapping—a natural defense mechanism. The reminder phrase maintains the connection to the problem so that the somatic stimulation from tapping can specifically target that very issue.

Together with the setup phrase, it forms the linguistic framework of every EFT round. The step-by-step EFT guide shows how both work together in a complete sequence. The article on EFT application areas offers further insights into how it works.

What if I have other thoughts or feelings while tapping?

This is normal and a good sign. You can adapt the reminder sentence accordingly and follow the new impulse - for example: "This new thought" or name the newly emerged emotion directly.

Does the reminder sentence have to be worded negatively?

In the classic EFT approach, the reminder sentence initially remains with the problem - this sometimes feels unfamiliar. As soon as the stress decreases, it can switch to more positive formulations. This development shows the progress of the sequence.
