Setup set (EFT)

The setup sentence is the introductory core sentence in an EFT session. It names the emotional problem and combines it with a statement of self-acceptance - a combination that prepares the nervous system for the following tapping sequence.

What is the setup phrase in EFT?

The Setup Phrase is the first and fundamental step in every EFT round. It is spoken aloud three times while simultaneously tapping the karate point—the outer edge of the hand. Its purpose is twofold: it focuses attention precisely on the emotional issue to be addressed, and at the same time, it contains a formula for unconditional self-acceptance.

Structure of the Setup Phrase

The classic structure is:

“Even though I [problem], I fully and deeply accept myself just as I am.”

The problem is described as concretely and honestly as possible. Examples:

Why self-acceptance?

The self-acceptance formula is not a trick, but an essential component. It signals to the nervous system that it is safe to feel the problem—without immediate judgment or the need for a solution. This approach has parallels to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and facilitates the emotional processing triggered by tapping.

You can find the complete procedure for an EFT session in the EFT step-by-step guide.

Does the setup record have to have exactly this wording?

No. The basic structure - problem + self-acceptance - remains the same, but the wording can be adapted. The important thing is that the sentence feels authentic and true to you.

What if I don't believe in self-acceptance?

That's often the case - and it's perfectly fine. You don't have to believe the sentence to say it. Just saying it out loud acts as a gentle invitation to the nervous system, even if you feel inner resistance.
