Sextile

The sextile is a harmonious astrological aspect in which two planets are 60 degrees apart. It is regarded as a beneficial, stimulating aspect that suggests opportunities and talents - but with one difference to the trine: the sextile wants to be actively used.

What is a sextile?

A sextile occurs when two planets form an angle of 60 degrees with each other (orb: approx. 4–6 degrees). In the zodiac, it always connects signs of different but complementary elements: fire with air, or earth with water. This combination creates a natural synergy: the energies support one another without overlapping.

The sextile is considered a favorable, stimulating aspect—a signal of opportunities, talents, and easy cooperation between the planetary principles involved. Unlike the trine (120 degrees), which makes talents available almost automatically, the sextile needs a little nudge: It shows where potential lies—but whether you use it is up to you.

Sextiles in the Birth Chart

Along with the conjunction, trine, square, and opposition, the sextile is one of the five classic major aspects. You can find an overview of all aspects in the article on aspects.

What is the difference between a sextile and a trine?

Both are considered harmonious, but the trine (120 degrees) connects planets of the same element and has a more fluid, almost automatic effect. The sextile (60 degrees) connects complementary elements and shows potentials that require a little more conscious use.

Is the sextile a strong aspect?

It is considered milder than a trine and significantly less intense than a square or opposition. Its strength lies in its quality: it shows areas where development is comparatively easy - if you become active.
