Sun sign
The sun sign is the sign of the zodiac in which the sun was located at the time of birth. It is the best-known sign in everyday astrology and essentially describes a person's conscious self-expression, identity and life path.
What is a sun sign?
The sun sign—often simply referred to as the “zodiac sign”—indicates which of the twelve signs of the zodiac the Sun was in at the time of birth. Since the Sun passes through all twelve signs over the course of a year, lingering in each for about a month, the sun sign can be determined solely by the date of birth.
Astrologically, the Sun represents the central self: the conscious identity, the core expression, the life’s purpose, and what a person essentially strives for. The Sun sign reveals how someone seeks recognition, where they thrive, and what aligns with their inner nature.
Sun Sign vs. the Entire Horoscope
As well-known as the sun sign is—in professional astrology, it is just one element among many. Moon sign, ascendant, planetary positions, and houses significantly complete the picture. Those who rely solely on their sun sign are, in a sense, seeing only one letter of the complete astrological alphabet. The twelve signs, with all their qualities, are presented in detail in our article The Signs of the Zodiac.
Nevertheless, the sun sign is a valuable starting point: It broadly indicates the fundamental energy with which a person navigates life—and why certain themes keep recurring.
Why can't my sun sign suit me?
Because the birth chart contains much more than the sun sign. Moon sign, Ascendant and other planetary positions can strongly dominate and overlay or modify the Sun sign.
What data do I need to know my sun sign?
Only your birthday. The exact time and place are not relevant for the sun sign - but they are for the ascendant and the complete horoscope.
