Value hierarchy

A hierarchy of values is a personal ranking of your own core values - i.e. the beliefs and principles that guide your actions and decisions. It makes it clear which values take priority in the event of conflict and helps you to make decisions in line with what is really important to you. A clear hierarchy of values is a key tool for personal development.

What is a hierarchy of values?

Values are the internal standards by which we judge what is right, important, and desirable. Every person carries an individual set of values within them—freedom, security, connection, honesty, creativity, loyalty, and many more. The hierarchy of values ranks these values and shows which one takes precedence when in doubt.

Why is this ranking important?

Values often conflict with one another. When freedom and security are both highly prioritized at the same time, internal tensions arise—for example, when deciding whether to give up a stable, permanent job for a self-employment project. Those who know their hierarchy can make clearer decisions in such situations without getting lost in contradictions.

How do you identify your hierarchy of values?

Working on values is a core component of holistic personal development and is closely linked to genuine self-awareness.
