Human Design Centers: What is defined in you - and what you absorb from the world
In the Human Design Bodygraph there are 9 centers - some are colored (defined), others are white (open). Defined centers show your reliable energy. Open centers show where you absorb and strengthen the world - and where you can lose yourself.
The Bodygraph: Your Energetic Map
When you see your Human Design chart for the first time, you’ll immediately notice that some areas are colored, while others are white. These areas are called centers—and the pattern of colored and white is as unique as your fingerprint.
The Bodygraph contains 9 centers that resemble the 7 chakras of the Hindu system, but are not identical to them. Each center represents a specific type of energy, function, or life principle.
The key distinction:
- Defined (colored) centers are your reliable, constant energy. Here you have a steady character, a predictable way of being. This energy radiates outward—others can sense it.
- Open (white) centers are like antennas. Here, you absorb other people’s energy and amplify it. This makes you receptive and wise in these areas—but also prone to mistaking others’ energy for your own.
Your defined centers show who you are. Your open centers show what you are learning—and where you need to be careful not to lose yourself.
Understanding your centers is one of the most practical aspects of Human Design—because it explains behavioral patterns that you may have regarded as “my way” your whole life, even though they don’t actually come from you.
The 9 Centers in Detail
Head Center (Crown) – Inspiration and Pressure
Theme: Mental pressure, questions, inspiration. Defined: You have a constant source of inspiration and questions—your mind is reliably active. Open: You pick up on others’ mental questions and amplify them. This can feel as though you constantly have to find answers—to questions that aren’t even yours.
Ajna Center (Mind) – Thinking and Conceptualizing
Theme: Thought formation, opinions, mental processing. Defined: You have a fixed way of thinking and processing information. Open: You are mentally flexible and can take on different perspectives—but you can also become unsure of which opinion is truly your own.
Throat Center (Throat) – Expression and Manifestation
Theme: Communication, action, manifestation. Defined: You have a reliable way of expressing yourself—whether through words, actions, or creativity. Open: You often feel the pressure to be heard and tend to speak too much or at the wrong time. Your non-self theme: “I must draw attention to myself.”
Self Center (G Center) – Identity and Direction
Theme: Identity, love, life direction. Defined: You have a firm sense of who you are and where your path is leading. Open: You mirror the identity and direction of others. You can be chameleon-like—and sometimes unsure of who you “really” are.
Heart Center (Ego) – Willpower and Value
Theme: Willpower, self-worth, material world. Defined: You have natural willpower and a healthy ego. Open: You absorb the pressure of others’ will and constantly try to prove yourself. Non-Self: “I have to achieve more to be worth anything.”
Sacral Center – Life Energy and Work Energy
Theme: Life energy, sexuality, work capacity, endurance. Defined: You are a Generator or Manifesting Generator with an enormous, regenerative source of energy. When you do what inspires you, your endurance is virtually limitless. Open: You are a Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector. You absorb sacral energy and amplify it—which is why you sometimes feel more energy around Generators than they do themselves. The danger: You don’t know when enough is enough.
Spleen Center – Intuition and Survival
Theme: Instinct, immune system, survival instinct, sense of time. Defined: You have a reliable instinct that tells you in a split second what is healthy and safe. Open: You amplify others’ fears and sometimes cling to unhealthy situations or people because the amplified spleen energy feels “good.”
Emotional Center (Solar Plexus) – Emotions and Clarity
Theme: Emotions, passion, desire, emotional waves. Defined: You experience emotional waves—highs and lows—that aren’t caused by external events but are part of your natural rhythm. Your task: Don’t make any major decisions at the peak or the low point. Open: You absorb others’ emotions, amplify them—and mistake them for your own. "Why am I suddenly so sad?" Maybe you aren’t at all.
Root Center – Pressure and Drive
Theme: Adrenaline, stress, drive, pressure. Defined: You have a constant inner drive—an engine that propels you forward. Open: You absorb others’ stress and amplify it. The to-do list never feels complete because the pressure isn’t coming from you.
