Chakra meditation
Chakra meditation is a meditation practice based on the yogic concept of chakras - energy centers located along the spine. The aim is to focus attention on these centers in order to promote inner balance and self-awareness.
What is Chakra Meditation?
Chakra meditation is a form of meditation that originates from the yogic and tantric traditions of India. The Sanskrit word “chakra” means “wheel” or “circle” and refers to energy centers located in the human body—primarily along the spine. The classical system describes seven main chakras, from the root chakra at the base of the pelvis to the crown chakra at the top of the head.
How does the practice work?
In chakra meditation, attention is directed sequentially or specifically toward individual chakras. Visualizations (e.g., specific colors or lights), affirmations, breathing techniques, or sounds (so-called bija mantras) are often used. The primary goal is not a supernatural experience, but rather a deeper awareness of the body and the recognition of inner tensions or blockages.
Chakras and Modern Practice
From a scientific perspective, chakras cannot be detected as anatomical structures. However, many practitioners use the chakra system as a metaphorical tool for self-reflection—similar to how archetypes in psychology serve as a structuring aid without needing to be taken literally.

Do I have to believe in chakras to practise chakra meditation?
No. Many people use chakra meditation as a structured body and attention exercise without taking the concept literally. The visualizations can serve as mental anchors for body awareness and relaxation.
What are the seven main chakras?
The seven main chakras are: Root Chakra (Muladhara), Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana), Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura), Heart Chakra (Anahata), Throat Chakra (Vishuddha), Brow Chakra (Ajna) and Crown Chakra (Sahasrara). Each is associated with certain areas of the body, themes and characteristics.
