The nine Human Design Centers

The nine centers in the bodygraph - from the crown to the root. Find out what defined and open centers say about you and your energy.

The nine Human Design Centers

The nine centers form the basic framework of the Bodygraph. Similar to the chakra system, they describe energy centers in the body—though with nine centers instead of seven and a different focus. Each center has an overarching theme and can be either defined (colored) or open (white).

Defined means: This energy is firmly anchored within you. You radiate it, and others perceive it.
Open means: You absorb the energy of your surroundings and amplify it. Here lies great potential for learning—but also the danger of losing yourself.

The Pressure Centers

Crown Center – Inspiration Located
at the very top of the Bodygraph, the Crown Center creates the pressure to think and search for answers. Defined: You are a source of ideas and inspire others to think. Open: You let yourself be inspired by the thoughts of others—be careful not to get lost in other people’s minds.

Root Center – Drive
At the bottom of the chart sits the Root Center, serving as the engine for the urge to act and stress management. Defined: You have a steady inner drive and handle pressure well. Open: External stress can quickly overwhelm you—learn to distinguish which pressure is truly yours.

The Centers of Consciousness

Ajna Center – Mind
The Ajna processes the information that comes in through the crown. Defined: You think in a steady, reliable way and have clear convictions. Open: You can take on different perspectives—be careful not to get lost in overthinking.

Spleen Center – Intuition
The spleen center is the seat of instinct, intuition, and physical well-being. Defined: You have a reliable sixth sense and intuitively know what is good for you. Open: Your instinct is receptive to the fears of others – setting boundaries is especially important here.

Solar Plexus – Emotions
The emotional center processes the entire spectrum of human feelings. Defined: You experience emotional waves of highs and lows—let feelings flow through you instead of letting them carry you away. Open: You absorb others’ emotions and amplify them—learn to distinguish others’ feelings from your own.

The Motor Centers

Sacral Center – Life Energy
The most powerful motor center, seat of life force and creative energy. Defined (in Generators and MGs): You possess enormous energy for work and action—listen to your sacral gut feeling. Open: Your energy comes in bursts. Allocate it consciously instead of trying to keep up with the endurance of defined sacrals.

Heart Center – Willpower
This is the seat of self-worth, ego, and willpower. Defined (only ~30% of people): You have an iron will and can reliably keep your promises. Open: You don’t have to prove anything to anyone—your worth does not depend on performance.

The Centers of Expression and Identity

Throat Center – Expression and Manifestation
Everything that wants to be brought into the world flows through the throat—whether as words, actions, or creative works. Defined: You have a clear, powerful voice and expressive ability. Open: You sometimes lack the right words, but you can adapt surprisingly well to different communication styles.

G Center – Identity and Direction
The identity center answers the question “Who am I?” and sets the direction in life. Defined: You have a stable self-image and a clear inner compass. Open: You are flexible in your identity and can reflect to others who they truly are – be careful not to let yourself be completely taken over by one person.

Open is not weak A common misconception: open centers are not weak points, but areas of learning. It is precisely where you are open that you can develop deep wisdom in the course of your life - provided you recognize that the energy you absorb is not your own. The art lies in discernment.
