The five types of human design
Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector or Reflector: Discover the five basic types in Human Design and find out how your energy works.
In Human Design, there are five basic types that describe how your life energy fundamentally works. Your type shows you how you best interact with the world and which strategy will help you lead a fulfilling life. About 70% of people are Generators or Manifesting Generators—the remaining 30% are divided among Manifestors, Projectors, and the rare Reflectors.
The Generator (~37%)
Strategy: Respond
Generators possess a defined sacral center and thus a seemingly inexhaustible supply of life energy. They are the implementers and builders of society. Their greatest strength lies in their endurance—whatever they start, they see through with admirable perseverance.
The key for Generators: Don’t initiate things yourself, but wait for the right impulse from outside and then listen to your gut feeling. A clear “yes” in your gut means the green light. If a Generator acts against their gut feeling, it inevitably ends in frustration.
The Manifesting Generator (~33%)
Strategy: React, then inform
Manifesting Generators combine the creative power of the Generator with the initiative of the Manifestor. They are versatile, efficient, and can drive multiple projects forward simultaneously. Their special gift: They often find shortcuts and get things done faster than others.
Their challenge lies in pausing between reaction and manifestation. Only when their gut feeling confirms that the impulse is right should they get started—and then inform those around them.
The Manifestor (~8%)
Strategy: Inform
Manifestors are the only types in Human Design who can initiate things on their own initiative without having to wait for an external impulse. They possess tremendous inner drive and are natural pioneers who get projects off the ground and inspire others.
The key lesson for Manifestors: Inform those around them about their plans. Not to ask for permission, but to avoid friction and bring others along. If they fail to do so, they encounter resistance and feel held back—their so-called “Non-Self theme” is anger.
The projector (~21%)
Strategy: Wait for an invitation
Projectors have no defined sacral center and therefore no continuous working energy. Instead, they possess the unique ability to read, direct, and optimize the energy of others. They are natural advisors, coaches, and leaders.
For Projectors, it is crucial to wait for the right invitation—especially when it comes to major life decisions (career, relationships, place of residence). When their talents are recognized and appreciated, they can achieve extraordinary things. Without recognition, they become embittered.
The Reflector (~1%)
Strategy: Wait out a lunar cycle
Reflectors are the rarest type. They have no defined center—they are completely open and reflect the energy of their surroundings. This makes them exceptionally empathetic and sensitive people who, like a seismograph, can sense the health of a community.
For important decisions, Reflectors should wait at least one full lunar cycle (29 days). Since the moon activates a different gate each day, Reflectors experience their decision from various perspectives and thus arrive at true clarity.
Your type is just the beginning The five types form the basis, but no person is just their type. Profiles, centers, channels and gates add countless nuances. Two generators can feel completely different. Your type shows you the framework - you discover the rest through experimentation and introspection.
