Emotional authority
Emotional authority is the most common inner decision-making authority in human design and applies to all types with a defined solar plexus center. It states that reliable decisions should only be made after an emotional wave has passed - i.e. over time. Spontaneous decisions from the high or low of an emotion are considered unreliable here.
What is emotional authority?
In Human Design, emotional authority describes the decision-making strategy for all people with a defined Solar Plexus center. Since the Solar Plexus center is considered the most powerful center in the Bodygraph, it overrides all other defined centers as the authority—regardless of a person’s Human Design type.
The Principle of the Emotional Wave
People with emotional authority continuously experience waves of highs and lows—not as a mood problem, but as a biologically determined system. During an emotional high, everything feels achievable; during a low, much seems hopeless. Neither of these extreme states yields reliable decisions. Only when the wave subsides and clarity emerges has the right moment arrived for an important decision.
Practical Approach
The advice is: Sleep on it—or sleep on it for several nights. In a fast-paced world, this often feels uncomfortable, but it protects against impulsive decisions that are later regretted. There is no such thing as complete emotional clarity like flipping a switch; the goal is a relative calm from which an authentic yes or no can be sensed.
Emotional Authority affects about half of all people. It is closely linked to the theme of Strategy and Authority, which is considered a central tool for an authentic life in Human Design.
How long should I wait for clarity?
This is individual. For smaller decisions, hours can be enough; for major life decisions (job, relationship, relocation), many Human Design practitioners recommend waiting at least several days or weeks until real calm sets in.
Does emotional authority mean that I should suppress my feelings?
Not at all. It's not about suppressing emotions, but about giving them time to express themselves. Only then - in the relative silence after the wave - do you make decisions that really suit you.
