Incarnation cross
The incarnation cross in Human Design describes the overarching life mission and the issues that a person is confronted with in this life. It is derived from the four sun gates at the time of birth and the prenatal imprint and thus forms the foundation of the individual energy map. There are 192 incarnation crosses, which are divided into three main groups.
What is the Incarnation Cross?
The Incarnation Cross is one of the most profound concepts in Human Design. It describes the overarching life mission or the thematic field that a person carries in this life—not as a rigid task, but as a framework within which one’s own energy unfolds most naturally.
How is the Incarnation Cross formed?
The Cross is derived from four Sun positions contained within two data points:
- Conscious Sun Gate (moment of birth): the gate in which the Sun was positioned at the moment of birth
- Conscious Earth Gate: the opposite gate (180 degrees)
- Unconscious Sun Gate: the Sun’s position approximately 88 degrees before birth (prenatal imprint)
- Unconscious Earth Gate: the corresponding opposite gate
These four gates form a symbolic cross and give the Incarnation Cross its name.
The three main groups
The 192 Incarnation Crosses are divided into right-angle crosses (personal karma, inward-directed), left-angle crosses (transpersonal karma, outward-directed), and juxtaposition crosses (fixed life path, stable and unchangeable). The Incarnation Cross is often only fully lived when one knows and applies one’s own strategy and authority.
Is the incarnation cross the same as a life mission?
They are related, but not identical. The incarnation cross rather describes the thematic field or the energy framework in which someone moves. A concrete 'mission' only results from the interaction with profile, type, authority and channels.
When does the incarnation cross 'activate'?
In human design teaching, it is assumed that the incarnation cross can be lived more consciously from around the Saturn cycle (around the age of 30) - when the person begins to free themselves from conditioning and make more authentic decisions.
