Child of the sun
The sun child is the counterpart to the shadow child and represents the inner part that carries our strengths, positive experiences and our very own zest for life. It stands for the carefree, curious and loving child that lives within us.
What is the Sun Child?
Alongside the wounded shadow child, we all carry a Sun Child within us—an inner part that embodies our positive childhood experiences, our natural curiosity, our joy, and our strengths. The term was also coined by Stefanie Stahl’s work and describes that part of us that feels safe, loved, and alive.
The Sun Child reveals itself in moments of genuine lightness: when we lose ourselves in an activity, laugh heartily, or spontaneously show kindness to someone. It is not idealized or naive—it is simply that part of us that has not yet been disappointed or limited by life.
The Sun Child and the Shadow Child as Opposites
Working with the inner child is not about defeating the shadow child and living only as the sun child. Both parts are part of being fully human. The approach is rather: the more we understand and accept the shadow child, the easier it is for the sun child to become visible again.
Strengthening the Sun Child also means consciously building up resources—experiences, relationships, and activities that can provide a deep sense of vitality and belonging. Practices such as mindfulness in daily life or engaging with one’s own self-actualization can play a role in this.
What if I can hardly find access to my sun child?
This can happen if difficult childhood experiences were very formative. This does not mean that the sun child does not exist - it is often just deeply hidden. Gentle therapeutic work or positive, safe relationship experiences can help you to feel this part again.
Is the sun child the same as the "inner child" in other approaches?
Not quite. The term "inner child" can generally refer to the vulnerable, childlike part of us. Stefanie Stahl makes a specific distinction between the shadow child (wounds and negative beliefs) and the sun child (strengths and positive imprints).
