Trigon

The trine is a harmonious astrological aspect in which two planets form a distance of 120 degrees to each other. It is considered the most beneficial aspect in the horoscope and connects planets of the same element - their energies flow easily and supportively into each other.

What is a Trine?

A trine (also called a Trigon) occurs when two planets, as viewed from Earth, form an angle of 120 degrees (orb: approx. 6–8 degrees). Since the zodiac spans 360 degrees and is divided into four elements, planets in a trine are always in the same element—that is, both in fire signs, both in earth signs, both in air signs, or both in water signs.

The trine is considered the most fluid and harmonious aspect. The planets involved support and complement each other without creating friction. Abilities and talents described by a trine are often naturally available to you—you can draw on them without having to exert much effort.

The Downside of the Trine

Precisely because the trine seems so effortless, it holds a subtle challenge: what comes easily is rarely fully utilized. Talents described by trines can get lost in comfort zones if there is no conscious drive to pursue them.

Three planets in a trine with each other form what is known as a Grand Trine—a rare pattern indicating a strong focus on the qualities of an element. You can learn more about the elements in the article on the four elements; the article on aspects provides an overview of all aspects.

Why are planets in trine always in the same element?

Because the four elements each comprise three signs that are 120 degrees apart. Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

Is a horoscope without trigons a bad horoscope?

No. No aspect is per se better than another. Trines show areas of natural talent, but aspects of tension such as squares or oppositions are often the engines of growth and development.
