Flying Stars

The Flying Stars (Xuan Kong Fei Xing) represent the temporal aspect of Feng Shui. Nine stars are calculated based on a building’s construction date, orientation, and line of sight, and they move through the nine sectors in a fixed pattern. This dimension is time-dependent and changes with each period and each year—unlike the Bagua or Kua number.

What are the Flying Stars?

In classical Feng Shui, there are various levels of analysis—one of the most complex and, at the same time, most effective is Xuan Kong Fei Xing, or the Flying Stars. Unlike the static Bagua or the personal Kua number, this method introduces a crucial dimension: time.

The foundation of every star chart is the building itself—more specifically, three pieces of information: the construction date (sufficient to determine the current period), the orientation (the direction the back of the house faces), and the front view (the front of the house, usually the entrance side). From this information, a unique grid of nine stars is created, which are assigned to the nine sectors of the floor plan.

How do the stars move?

The nine stars are not static symbols—they move through the sectors in a fixed, mathematically determined pattern. This movement occurs on two time scales: once in twenty-year cycles and once annually. A sector considered favorable in one period may take on a different character the following year. Therefore, it is advisable to periodically reassess the chart.

Why is the time dimension so special?

Because it views the house as a living system. A star chart calculated 20 years ago may describe a different quality than it does today. Those who wish to delve deeper into the subject will find a related numerical symbolism in numerology—this makes it easier to understand the basic principles behind the nine stars.

Do I need detailed blueprints to create a star map?

For a general overview, the approximate year of construction and a compass bearing of the main facade are sufficient. For a precise analysis, it is recommended to seek the assistance of an experienced Feng Shui consultant, as even small deviations in the compass direction can alter the entire chart.

Are the Flying Stars different from Western Feng Shui?

Yes, definitely. The BTB Feng Shui (Black Sect) that is widespread in the West often does not use a compass and does not take the time dimension into account. The Flying Stars belong to the classical, compass-based school and are considered to offer a much more nuanced analysis.
