Command Post
The "command position" refers to the spot for a bed, desk, or stove from which the door is in view without being directly in line with it—usually diagonally across from it, with a solid wall behind you. In classical Feng Shui, it is considered the most important single measure in interior design and can be implemented without any structural changes.
What is the Command Position?
The command position is one of the best-known and most practical concepts in Feng Shui—and for good reason: It can be implemented in any room without any renovations or major investments.
The principle is simple: Whether you’re sleeping, working, or cooking, you should be able to see the door from where you are—without sitting or lying directly in its line of sight. The ideal position is usually diagonally across from the entrance, with a solid wall behind you. This combination of a clear view and having your back covered is the essence of the command position.
Why is it considered so fundamental?
Traditional Feng Shui views people as part of their environment—and an environment that provides both security and a clear view can have a noticeable impact on well-being. If you can’t see who is entering the room, you unconsciously remain on high alert. This can interfere with sleep, concentration, and relaxation.
Interestingly, this also reflects findings from environmental psychology: People often prefer places from which they can survey a room without being exposed themselves—a pattern that runs through many cultures and eras.
Which pieces of furniture does this apply to?
- Bed: Your head should be against a solid wall, with the door visible but not directly across from you.
- Desk: When working, you should ideally sit with a solid wall behind you and a view of the room—not with your back to the door.
- Stove: This principle also applies when cooking—those with their backs to the door may feel uncomfortable. A mirror or another solution that provides a clear view can be helpful here.
